Eye of the Needle helps Waterloo students have school uniforms



Eye of the Needle in Waterloo offers free service to families along the poverty line by supplying them with things like clothing, food and household items. One mission of the store is to help families with kids in Waterloo Public Schools have uniforms.



Patricia King with Eye of the Needle said the store has been serving families for three years now. Since Waterloo Public Schools switched to uniforms, they've been in higher demand during the summer before students return to school.



The uniform consists of khaki pants and a polo shirt. King said most families have more than one child, and with a bigger family comes a higher demand.

On average, Eye of the Needle gives about 800 school uniforms a year.



King said poverty levels are roughly $35,000 for an individual, $38,000 for a family of two and $41,000 for a family of three. Along with students, King said a large number of adults come through the doors in need of clothing.

Eye of the Needle also takes food donations and household items, like laundry detergent and cleaning supplies. King also said baby items are in high demand right now, as people come in asking about baby carriers and clothes for small children.

Lawmakers, who are also military veterans were angered Tuesday when a host of their colleagues switched votes on a bill that would have required public schools to give recruiters in uniform access to school grounds.



According to the Maine Department of Education, a handful of schools in Maine have disallowed military recruiters to wear uniforms while visiting students, but those opposed to the legislation said no evidence of recruiters in uniform being barred exists.

Republicans who supported the bill, LD 1503, noted 20 Democrats who voted for the measure on June 4, switched and voted against it Tuesday.



The measure received 97 votes but needed 101 to be enacted as a mandate. The state Senate later passed the bill 33-0. The bill may still come back to the House again Tuesday for another vote.



Rep. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, also a former member of the Lewiston School Committee, said she voted against the bill because it was unnecessary and there wasn’t a problem with uniformed recruiters gaining access to Maine schools.



“It felt like an unnecessary law to me,” Rotundo said. “We already allow for military recruiters in our schools.”



But Rotundo voted for the bill on June 4 joining 114 other House members who supported it. She changed her vote Tuesday to vote against it, according to legislative voting records.

Libby said there was no evidence that recruiters were being kept out of schools despite concerns from some recruiters in Maine.



“I am more inclined to believe our local superintendents than a military recruiter,” Libby said.



The issue first came to the attention of lawmakers from Maine Department of Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen, who told legislators he had been contacted by a recruiter who said there were a handful of schools that disallowed uniformed reporters.



That recruiter also noted other issues with the schools that made it difficult for recruiters to gain access to students considering post-secondary school options.



Rep. Corey Wilson, R-Augusta, a Marine Corps veteran, said he was shocked by the vote switching Tuesday.



“I think it’s a slap in the face to the military in general,” Wilson said. “It’s wrong to say to a military recruiter, ‘Thank you for your service but leave your uniform at the door when you come into one of our schools.’”
