Griesse awarded museum's Woodhull tribute

“The daffodils are out this year in a way I have never seen before. I think it is a tribute to her,” said Holly Griesse Shai, speaking of her mother, Jill, who April 20 became the third woman to receive the Victoria Woodhull Woman of Distinction Award.Philanthropist, political activist, community leader, competitive swim coach, business partner with her husband and mother of three: Griesse has done it all, and done it well.

And now, while waging the most challenging campaign of her life, her fight with fourth-stage pancreatic cancer, Griesse has just followed up a successful run as chairwoman of the Central Ohio branch of the American Daffodil Society by hosting, with her husband Paul, the fifth annual Daffodil Stroll at their Granville farm, where Griesse received the award Saturday night as part of the festivities. The award is bestowed by the Women’s Board of the Robbins Hunter Museum.

“My diagnosis is a formula for death,” Griesse said Thursday. “But they told me I only had two months and it has been eight. The daffodils have helped me get through, and this time has allowed me to see my flowers again and say goodbye to my friends and to my daffodils.”Griesse initiated the Daffodil Stroll in 2009 to raise money to restore the Victoria Woodhull Clock at the Robbins Hunter Museum.“Jill could have quit after the first stroll, but instead she has repeated it every year since,” said Robbins Hunter Museum Director Ann Lowder. “This year, we were reluctant to ask her, but Jill said she wanted to celebrate her daffodils again.”

Since 2009, the stroll has raised more than $80,000, used not only to restore the clock, but also to install handicap-accessible restrooms and entry, to update the kitchen and to restore the Avery Downer House to its original color scheme, Lowder said. The Victoria Woodhull Clock is the only monument in the country to the first woman to run for United States president, in 1872, when women were not even allowed to vote. Like Woodhull, Griesse has served in many capacities, offering her time, talents and, always, her full attention.“When I was first hired in 2007 as director of the Robbins Hunter Museum, there were no women on the board, Lowder said. “When we were fortunate enough to have Jill accept our invitation to serve. She really put herself into it. When Jill commits to something, she rolls up her sleeves and gets to work. She also attracted several strong community leaders, and she was instrumental in founding the Women’s Board, our support group.”

“Jill is a committed individual with good ideas who follows through with action,” said Jean Jankowski, a member of the Robbins Hunter Museum Women’s Board and a committee member for the Stroll. “She has enormous strength of purpose and nothing gets in her way until a plan becomes a reality.”

This month, Griesse invited the entire membership of the Central Ohio Daffodil Society to spend the third day of their April 11-13 convention in Granville, where members arrived in three busloads to visit the daffodil plantings of Drew McFarland, Louise Denny and Jankowski before sitting down for dinner in a tent at the Griesse farm.Shop our great womens shoe collection including heels, sandals, boots, athletic shoes, wweetheartnecklinedress and more.

“Jill wanted them to see the everyday beauty of daffodils in a landscape setting,” Jankowski said. “Many of the members plant fields of daffodils in rows and then select only the perfect specimens to display. Jill feels they should be given to people and enjoyed.”Holly Shai, Griesse’s daughter, has enabled her mother to keep moving and accomplish her dreams. Helping to run a daffodil convention was a new experience for Shai but one that inspired her.

“When my mother got the diagnosis, she was determined to focus on the future and she has done it with grace,” Shai said. “She wanted to see through to her daffodils and to the convention, and she has worked through the chemo to make it to this point. This last seven months has been a far better experience than I ever thought possible. It has been a beautiful time with her because her fight and belief have made it beautiful.”

There was a zombie gathering in London Tuesday, but it wasn't to feast on human brains -- it was to celebrate a wedding!UK couple Jennifer Jones and Rob Blackmore got married in a zombie-themed wedding, complete with full zombie makeup and costumes for the couple and their guests, special "zombie-fied" vows and a brain-shaped cake, the Mirror reported Wednesday.

Jones and Blackmore won the "nightmare" wedding from video game company Deep Silver, which held a contest back in January to award one couple a free zombie wedding and Caribbean honeymoon in honor of their new game, Dead Island Riptide. Contestants posted videos on the Dead Island Riptide Facebook page explaining why they'd be the most deserving of a zombie wedding, and Deep Silver chose Jones and Blackmore as the winners earlier this month.Blackmore told the Mirror that he has been a zombie fan since he was a kid,New arrivals in the arminycling collections stick to this reputation. and Jones said that "everyday is like Halloween" for her."We wanted to get married on Halloween anyway so it was always going to be a spooky, creepy, weird wedding," Jones said.
